Many of us are self-seekers. We want to find out who we are, what we’re all about, and what we’re meant to do in this life. We go off the beaten path and learn about ourselves. We stretch our boundaries and learn some of life’s little secrets. We even make huge changes in our lives when we realize we aren’t living according to who we are or who we want to be.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.
However, I had a realization this morning while I was making my coffee: this way of thinking is all about us. We’re so worried about who we are being, what our true voice is supposed to sound like, or what we should be doing next with our lives. We’re not purposely being selfish, but we sometimes forget that we affect (and influence) the people around us too.
Something amazing happens when we shift our focus to those around us. It seems counterintuitive, but we actually learn even more about ourselves.
Have you ever met someone you immediately trust? You tell them things that you normally wouldn’t even tell a really good friend. You confide in them and don’t think twice about it. Why is that?
It’s because they’re open, non-judgmental, they take themselves out of the equation, and they’re being themselves.
By them being authentically them, they are allowing you to be authentically you.
You can sense (either consciously or subconsciously) that there’s no ego there, no ulterior motive. They’re just genuinely interested in you and what you have to say. Therefore you leave your ego behind and be authentically you. Our authentic selves love to share openly and honestly. It’s so refreshing when we can just be ourselves around someone, isn’t it?
3 Unconventional Reasons It’s Incredibly Important To Be Yourself
1) Being yourself gives people around you the opportunity to be themselves
Try to remember how it feels when you’re around someone who is being 100% them. Remember how good it feels to just be yourself around them without any judgment or need to try to be something you’re not. Then be that for those people around you.
2) Being yourself doesn’t allow any space for the ego; which, in turn, tells others that they can leave theirs behind as well
Our ego is often the biggest thing standing between our authentic selves and inauthentic selves. Cutting out the ego is the fastest way to reconnect with our true selves, so creating a space where those around you can leave their egos behind is a great gift to give.
3) Being yourself allows you to see a side of people that most people don’t get to see
When people feel they can truly be themselves around you, you will see a side of them you’ve never seen before – and a side that many people won’t ever get to see. When people drop their guard and open up, they bring out their best selves, their real selves.
